Signs that it’s Time to Replace those Old Windows

Window installation and replacement is a big job, so it can be tempting to hang onto those old windows as long as possible. If you’re on the fence about whether or not it’s time to spruce up your windows, see if any of the following questions apply to you:

1. Is your house too cold, even after you turn up the heat?
Fully 15-20% of heat loss occurs through windows, so make sure yours are properly insulated and prepared for the elements. Cheaper windows also tend to let in drafts. Investing in better windows will actually save you money on utilities by keeping that heat in during long winter months. The energy cost savings can equal or top the cost of window replacement.

2. Are you up to code?
Many building codes require egress windows for any room to be used as a bedroom. Basement egress windows are especially important, to provide a fire escape route for a family member or tenant living downstairs. The cost of egress window installation can run in the thousands, but you’re also paying for the benefits of code adherence and safety.

3. Not enough light in your house?
Installing bay windows is a great way to brighten up your spaces and add elegance and class to any room. They also increase property value and square footage. Place bay windows on a north-facing wall for ideal lighting throughout the day. Skylights can also be a great way to provide natural light and airiness to an interior bathroom or walk-in closet.

4. Having serious trouble opening or closing your windows?
It’s time to replace them. Windows which have rusted or no longer balance properly can be a serious hazard to you and your family. The cost of window replacement is daunting for many people, but no more daunting than the medical bills if that old window comes down at a bad time.

Window replacements are a great way to put a fresh face on your home. If any of these points applied to you, consider contacting a contractor or visiting your local home repair store to see what would be best for your house!
