Storm Windows

Why Choose Storm Windows?

A storm window is a type of window that is fixed to a normal window. Essentially, storm windows provide an extra layer of insulation and protection for windows. While seasonal outdoor storm windows are typically put up during cold-weather seasons to improve energy efficiency, storm windows can be used year-round for a number of reasons, including:

  • To reduce heat loss and heat gain
  • To protect valuable woodworking or glass (like heirloom or lead glass)
  • To add specialty glass features (like solar tinting)
  • To reduce noise

When you have storm windows installed, they do not replace your windows. Instead, they are fixed inside or outside of the existing windows to improve window performance. Typically, interior storm windows are more effective than exterior storm windows at reducing drafts and air infiltration.

A nice thing about having storm windows installed is that they do not require any carpentry or structural work to your home, so installation doesn’t take nearly as much time as it does with replacement windows. And, for those who can’t afford window replacement or have poorly performing single pane windows, having storm new windows installed can help improve their window performance for a fraction of the cost.

Types of Storm Windows

Storm windows come in a variety of pane materials, frame materials and styles. For instance:

Storm window panes can be made of glass, plastic, Plexiglas or acrylics. While non-glass panes cost less than glass ones, they do not look nearly as nice, and they are prone to damage, scratching and yellowing.

Storm window frames can be of wood, aluminum, fiberglass or vinyl. Unfortunately, there is no “right type” of storm window frame because each type has its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, aluminum frames are strong and almost maintenance free, but they are very poor insulators. And, while wood frames are good insulators, they require more care and will weather with age. What type of storm window you should choose often comes down to your needs and your budget.
